no worries, change of venue!

I’m switching out the art show tonight after trivia, so today is the last chance to see my abstract landscapes. Come out and see my figura astratta show this month in it’s new and improved venue Bellytimber Tavrn!

Figura Astratta-Closed Early

I took a few days to cool off before posting about how the whole dealing with a church thing went because it was so horrible and jaw-dropping. I’m just going to say don’t go down there to see the show because it’s all back in my living room. I am so done with St Paul’s that I don’t even feel a desire to get to the bottom of the insanity that ensued in dealing with the staff there.  I should have trusted my initial reluctant gut, a lesson that occasionally needs to be relearned, I guess.

figura astratta – First Friday, August 3

Come check out my art next Friday, August 3rd, in the Gallery at St. Paul’s Episcopal. It’s a really beautiful historic building. I have no affiliation to the church, I was just asked by a someone at a Richmond eats Richmond potluck to show at the venue for their First Friday series.

There will be FREE beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic punch. My mama and I will be cooking up some delectable snacks. My parents will be in from Indiana and they know how to throw an art opening party.

Free parking in the adjacent deck on 8th between Grace and Franklin, less than a mile from the other downtown Art Walk galleries.

We will also be playing exquisite corpse so those who haven’t attended due to the bar venues can participate in a more low key atmosphere.

Kids welcome!

Come early for free tours of the historic building (including AMAZING Tiffany glass-and believe me I do not say that lightly).

theology, intellectualism, and morality, oh my!

So last night I was watching Pawn Stars  with the fam and someone brought into Rick this Albrecht Dürer etching print, Knight, Death, and the Devil. My interest was piqued. I remember reading a bit about him in undergrad art history but I was 19 and hadn’t yet realized the entertainment value of  historical connections. I definitely don’t know my 16th C. art history.

Apparently,  Knight, Death, and the Devil is thought to represent psalm 23. and you all know what that means, Albrecht Dürer is connected through that bible verse to both Coolio and Weird Al Yankovic!

The Met site says this image was part of a trilogy including Melancholia 1 and St. Jerome in His Study, each representing “three kinds of virtue in medieval scholasticism—theological, intellectual, and moral.” I was thinking about how in America today it seems the theology branch is beating the intellectual branch with the morality branch. Now there’s an social illustration the making, threadless much??!!

So then I looked up Dürer in my college Art History text book and it talks about Melancholia I in depth, about the depiction of the artists fruitless introspection, and the beginning of showing characters with forlorned faces in  art (My teen self wrote in the margin, “pose like Jeremiah or Raphael’s Michelangelo” which I decoded to mean Michaelangelo’s Jeremiah in which Jeremiah is shown “Lamenting the fall of Jeruselum” and Raphaels Heraclitus in The School of Athens, who wikipedia says “He regarded himself as self-taught and a pioneer of wisdom. From the lonely life he led, and still more from the riddling nature of his philosophy and his contempt for humankind in general, he was called “The Obscure” and the “Weeping Philosopher”)  My book says that Dürer “seems to be making a visual play on the contrasting mental states of black melancholy and the light of inspiration.” The book doesn’t mention Melancholia’s  place in the 3 part series, but clearly this represents the plague of intellectualism.

On Pawn Stars, Rick bought the 17th century print of Knight, Death, and the Devil for $5,500 and probably got 10 times his money back when he sold it!

The show said the most important one, one of the first few pulls-from the 1500’s, sold for 350,000. I wonder if that’s the one The Met bought.

So, I haven’t left my parents house in days…  I guess I can find things to art blog about pretty much anywhere…

gradjumicated!

Well, folks it’s official! I am a Master of Fine Art. I found out last night around 9pm and proceeded to get instantly falling down drunk (sweet road rash to prove it)! Way to be an Abstract Expressionist, eh?

So with this passing of the the season, from student into professional artist, I’m going to move my blog over here. My graduate directed study blog will just be it’s own compact little archive. (When I finish a book in real life I put a piece of purple duct tape on the spine or spiral so I don’t try to take it out thinking there is paper left.) So after the final post,  I’m putting the purple duck tape on my blogger.

I’m in the habit of posting at least once a week for school, so I’d like to keep up that dialog out into the ibis, for my own posterity and record of my growth if nothing else, but maybe just maybe, my fans out there will get a kick out of my bi-daily-ish musings on art, fashion, pop culture and life as a person obsessed with those three things.  I may even throw in some food, too. My plan is to share what catches my fancy and also talk about my own works in progress. Because now, I am bound by no preconceived structure or expectation, but I have experienced the fruits of organizing my thoughts through web sharing. Now I am a free and multiple degree holding woman, and you and I both know there is no limit to what I can conceive of, let alone do!

I also have my artist website, emilyellingsworth.com, with my current most fully realized work on it, with which to solicit galleries for exhibition. It links back to twirlyskirts.com through the store link, so it’s possible they could be among you readers. (Hi, gallery owners and curators!) On that note I’ll get back to the cool art out in the world.

My pal Sam came to visit and this morning we went the the VMFA! If ya’ll haven’t seen the Mocha Dick exhibit you absolutely must (though beware of you google images for it…the wrong hits are NSFW)! Hurry, it ends Jan 29! This thing is AMAZING. It’s all white which automatically piques my interest, because I have a long love for all-white art, (in the outer ripples of wakes of Malevich and Rauschenberg) the subtleties and variations and shadows and textures allure the eye to explore a so-called lack of color. In this, all those elements are employed  in the sweeping smoothness of the whales form from head to tail, in the gashes in it’s aged skin and the barnacles that have grown on it over the years of sailing through seas. The details are lovely and the beast is awe inspiring. Do yourself a favor and get your whale tails on into the VMFA and experience it with your own senses!

Tomorrow I drive home for the holidays. I can’t believe I have to drive. I’m not sure how much art blogging I’ll do from Terre Haute, but you and I will both see…

Bear with me, I’m not sure how this blog is going to work on here, I may have to move it around. I’ll keep you posted! Oh man, bad blogging humor! I need sleep and water! And maybe a burrito.

until then.
